A school born from a legacy in 1880 deserved a playground built to last generations
Design, supply and installation of playground equipment for schools in Bermuda, with KOMPAN robinia wood structures.
Founded in 1880, Saltus Grammar School is one of Bermuda’s leading independent schools, educating children from ages 4 to 18 in Pembroke Parish, just outside Hamilton. When a school with this history invests in a new play area, it isn’t buying equipment — it’s investing in how its youngest students learn, move and grow. That’s the brief we took on.
How it started: play as part of learning
For a school, a playground is never “just” a playground. It’s where children build coordination, confidence, social skills and imagination — the kind of learning that happens outside the classroom and stays with them for life. Saltus wanted a play space worthy of that idea, and worthy of a campus that has been a cornerstone of Bermudian education for over a century.
The challenge on an island like Bermuda is always the same: intense sun, salt air and constant use by hundreds of energetic children. Whatever we installed had to look beautiful and survive years of daily play.
What we did: natural robinia play equipment by KOMPAN
We supplied and installed playground equipment from KOMPAN, built in robinia wood — a naturally durable hardwood that ages beautifully and withstands humidity, sun and salt without constant maintenance.
- A net swing that lets several children swing and balance together, encouraging cooperative play.
- Spring riders in robinia and steel for the youngest children, developing balance and motor skills.
- A layout designed to serve a wide age range across the school’s primary years.
The natural wood finish was a deliberate choice: it blends into the school’s green campus rather than competing with it, matching the calm, established character of Saltus. All equipment meets the safety standards required by IAAPA, of which we are official members.
The way we work
Every school is different, and so is every playground we build. We look at the age range, the space, the climate and the character of the campus before selecting a single product. At Saltus, that meant natural materials, robust construction and a design that respects a school with more than a century of history behind it.
The result
Saltus Grammar School now has a play area that matches its reputation: natural, durable and built for generations of students to come. Fittingly, the school itself began as a bequest — a gift meant to last — and its new playground was built in exactly that spirit.
