Montessori West is the newest Montessori school in the Cayman Islands, a family-run early education centre in West Bay, Grand Cayman, for children aged 3 to 6. Built with a strong sensory and nature-based philosophy at its heart, the school needed a play area that reflected everything Montessori stands for. That’s the brief ACL Projects was proud to take on.
How it started: a playground that had to match a philosophy
The Montessori method is built on a simple, powerful idea: children learn best in a natural, ordered and beautiful environment that invites them to explore at their own pace. For a school built on that belief, a playground of bright plastic and steel would have felt out of place. What they needed was play equipment that felt like an extension of the Montessori classroom — natural, warm and calm.
And, as always in the Caribbean, it had to withstand sun, humidity and salt air while being completely safe for the youngest children.
What we did: robinia wood play equipment by KOMPAN
We supplied and installed playground equipment from KOMPAN‘s robinia line — natural hardwood structures that are as beautiful as they are durable.
- Swings sized for young children, encouraging balance and confidence.
- Climbing structures with rope nets and slides that develop motor skills and coordination.
- Natural wood elements throughout, in keeping with the Montessori sensory approach.
Robinia is one of the most naturally durable hardwoods for outdoor play — it resists humidity, sun and salt without chemical treatment, ages beautifully, and gives children the warm, tactile experience of real wood. All equipment meets the safety standards required by IAAPA, of which we are official members.
The way we work
Every school has its own character, and the best playgrounds reflect it. For a Montessori school, that meant natural materials, calm design and equipment scaled precisely for early years — nothing oversized, nothing overstimulating, everything purposeful. We designed the space to feel like a natural extension of how these children already learn.
The result
Montessori West now has an outdoor play area that belongs to its philosophy: natural, safe and beautiful, where children can climb, swing and explore in a setting that mirrors the values of their classroom. For a young, family-run school, it’s a play space built to grow alongside its students.
